To the South of Shiregreen, near Firvale, lies Osgathorpe, an old Norse name meaning, Osgar's outlying farmstead .Here existed Osgathorpe Cottage, a house built on the site of a much older building.The Wake family were owners of much of the land in this area from 1750 to 1900.Most of Osgathorpe was built over in the nineteenth century.
